Lead Gen Mastery: Owning Vs. Renting Your Marketing Channels

Philip Ellis • May 21, 2024

Let’s take a minute to talk about all of the OPTIONS you have for getting more customers online. HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, Angie’sList, Google Ads, Facebook Ads, SEO, Google Business Listing, Craigslist (if that’s even still a thing…) are just a few of the many paths you can take. However, only a couple have proven themselves over time. Let’s quickly go over the pros & cons of each.

Evaluating Popular Lead Sources

HomeAdvisor

  • Pros: You can get “leads” fast.
  • Cons: They are shared leads, low quality, you don’t OWN your marketing channel (HomeAdvisor controls it all, including the price per lead), and you’re not investing long-term into your business. Essentially, you’re just renting someone else’s marketing channel!)

Thumbtack

  • Pros and Cons: Same as HomeAdvisor.

Google Ads

  • Pros: Get website traffic and leads quickly.
  • Cons: You have to pay per click for as long as you want results.

Facebook Ads

  • Pros: Get website traffic quickly.
  • Cons: Leads can be extremely low quality, even fake, and the “buyer intent” is much lower than leads from Google.

Craigslist

Really, do I even need to cover this one??? Let’s leave Craigslist for your Auntie Ethel and people selling their used mattresses.

Google Business Listing

  • Pros: Generates calls like clockwork if ranked on Google properly.
  • Cons: Takes some time to optimize & rank on Google.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

  • Pros: Highest quality leads of all lead sources, you OWN the marketing channel (your website), you don’t have to pay per lead, and you can continue to expand your target market reach over time.
  • Cons: Same as Google Business Listing, it can take some time to optimize & rank on Google.

The RENTING vs. OWNING Analogy

What’s the picture that’s being painted here? All of these lead sources and marketing channels fall into TWO categories:

  1. Lead sources where you are RENTING someone else’s marketing channel (HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, Craigslist, etc.)
  2. Lead Sources where you OWN the marketing channel, and it becomes a lead-generating ASSET that you can leverage for years to come (Google Business Listing & SEO).

The best illustration for this difference is “RENTING vs. OWNING”, in regards to real estate. Why would you pay someone rent ($$$$$), making them more money over time, when you could OWN your home, creating and leveraging an ASSET for yourself?

Leveraging SEO for Long-Term Benefits

At Roundhouse Digital Marketing, this is the message we’re constantly preaching. Whenever you decide to utilize SEO to transform your Website & Google presence into an ASSET that you invest in over time, good things happen. You start to generate your own, uber-qualified leads through your website & business listing, you begin to rank your website, which is a long-term growth catalyst for your company, and you’re building a marketing & lead generation asset that YOU own, and NO ONE ELSE (your competitors) have access to! It’s a win-win-win, and you’re constantly investing in your company.

Google is rolling out an automated lead crediting system for its Local Services Ads, fundamentally changing how businesses handle unqualified leads. This update, gradually rolling out through August, promises to streamline the lead management process and potentially increase overall credits for advertisers. Key Changes in the GLSA Platform: Automatic Lead Crediting: Google will now automatically identify and credit accounts for low-quality leads, eliminating the need for manual dispute submissions. Increased Overall Credits: While credits for "job type not serviced" and "geo not serviced" leads will be discontinued, Google assures advertisers they'll receive more credits overall through this automated system. Lead Feedback Survey: Advertisers can still provide feedback on individual leads through a new Lead Feedback Survey in their lead inbox, helping Google improve lead quality and occasionally leading to additional credits. What This Means for Your Business: This update simplifies the lead crediting process, potentially saving time and effort for businesses. However, it's crucial to remain vigilant in monitoring your GLSA performance to ensure you're receiving appropriate credits. Here's how we're adapting our strategies: Strategic Feedback Submission: We'll leverage the new Lead Feedback Survey to report any leads that should be credited but weren't caught by Google's automated system. Ongoing Optimization: We'll continue to fine-tune your GLSA campaigns to maximize quality leads and minimize unqualified ones. While Google's update promises a more efficient system, active management of your GLSA campaigns remains crucial. Our team at Roundhouse Digital Marketing is ready to help you adapt to these changes and maximize your return on investment in Google Local Services Ads. Looking for more qualified calls? Let's chat about small business SEO in Taylor, TX! I've been doing this for a while now, and let me tell you, it's a whole different ballgame here in our little slice of Williamson County. So picture this: I'm sitting in Good Strangers coffee shop on Main Street, sipping on some cold brew, when I overhear a local business owner talking about how his business isn't showing up on Google. I think, "Dang, another victim of the Taylor SEO struggle." It's like our own little Bermuda Triangle for search results sometimes! Local SEO Challenges in Taylor Look, Taylor isn't Austin or Round Rock. We've got our own quirks when it comes to getting found online: Small pond, big fish: With only about 18,000 folks in town, standing out can be tough Limited search volume: Not as many people searching for local businesses online Tight-knit community: Word-of-mouth still rules, but we gotta get with the times You may be thinking, "I don't need a fancy website; everyone knows me!" But here's the thing - new folks are moving in all the time, and they're using their phones to find places. If you're not showing up, you're missing out! Taylor-Specific SEO Tips Get listed on Google My Business (duh, but seriously!) Use "Taylor, TX" in your keywords - don't assume Google knows where you are Snag some local backlinks - chamber of commerce , local newspapers , etc. Add schema markup for your address and phone number.
